Publications
SIMILAR SITES: Educating yourself about online publications In a sense, every Web site is an online publication. Web publications are different from printed publications in that they can be interactive, they can be published quickly, and they can be updated continuously. For purposes of this page, we will focus specifically on online publications that are in some ways similar to printed ones. These publications may be online versions of printed journals or magazines, they may be publications that exist only on the Internet, or they may be a combination of the two. They publish articles that contribute to the professional literature, and they may be peer reviewed. Evaluating quality When reading articles on the Internet, it is important to evaluate the quality and legitimacy of the information presented. Articles in printed publications, such as professional journals, go through a review process before publication. But anyone can, with a little knowledge and skill, publish a Web site with no review process at all. Therefore, it is up to you to apply your own criteria when evaluating these articles. What are the qualifications of the author? Are articles written with a particular bias? Are they based on fact or opinion? Are they up-to-date? These are a few of the questions you should ask as you read articles online. Citing online articles If you are using the Internet for academic or scholarly research, you need to know how to cite articles you find online. As the Web changes and develops, new standards are being developed. Information is available on the American Psychological Association (APA) site and elsewhere to help address questions you may have about appropriate citation formats. |
