I need advice!!!!

THE NEW SOCIAL WORKERŽ ONLINE Discussion Forum: Social Work Student Forum: Archive through November 25, 2005: I need advice!!!!

I was just wondering what kinds of social work opportunities would be available to someone who does not attend grad school after their undergraduate study (Bachelor of Sociology). Does anyone have any answers? I just need some good advice. Thanks!

Well, you can't get a job as a social worker unless you have a BSW, MSW, or DSW in most, maybe all states. There are social service type jobs available, such as child protective services, and I am sure lots of other fields. But you cannot call yourself a social worker in any job without the degree. It is like impersonating a doctor or other professional. What is it that you want to do?

I want to work in the child protective services area...and I knew that you had to have a BSW in order to be a "social worker" but I don't understand what can be done with the degree that I am getting here. This university does not offer the BSW....How would I go about getting my BSW and how long would that take?

For a school to bestow the degree of BSW or MSW, that school must be accredited by the Counsel on Social Work Education. (CSWE) States that license or certify social workers require that in order to be licensed as a "social worker" you must graduate from a "CSWE accredited" program.
The BSW curriculum is generally spread out over the junior & senior years. I suspect that even if you found a BSW program willing to transfer credit from your current program, you would likely still need courses that are only offered over a 4 semesters period. By that time you could have earned your MSW!
Because of limited financial support from state legislatures (as well as a lot of other political "BS",) most state welfare organizations, including child and elder "protective services" do employ many people who do not have social work degrees to do a lot of the work.
Legally they can not identify themselves as social workers. And frankly, more than a few I've worked with in such positions suffer from the lack of adequate or appropriate education, preparation and supervision.
But there are jobs out there.
And thats exactlky what your schools placement office will tell you. "There are jobs out there for you with your degree." What they don't tell you is that those jobs are at the bottom end with little or no advancement opportunities. I know of one private college that offers BS degrees in "social services." And they will go to pains to point out that their school is "accredited."
But the degree & the accredidation aren't worth anything towards a SW license. (Even if the education was in fact outstanding!)

I have repeatedly seen schools present programs and "majors" as have much greater marketability than exists in the real world. Schools are after all, just big businesses. Buyer beware.

Its good that you are asking these questions.

Mr. Bachman,

Thank you sooo much for responding to my questions. This university does little, if that, to explain what kind of degree we are leaving here with. I am just concerned about the financial aspects when I graduate in Dec of this year. I would love to get my MSW, but I also know that financially it would be very tough. So, you are saying that if I do decide to further my education after graduating, I should definitely consider going for my MSW instead of the BSW? Either way it will take 4 semesters at the least?
