THE NEW SOCIAL WORKERŽ ONLINE Discussion Forum: Social Work Student Forum: Archive through November 17, 2001
By Jan Wright on Thursday, July 05, 2001 - 02:26 am: Edit Post

As a student who is taking the summer off,
I would certainly enjoy any good books on Social Work and the family.
This will keep me learning, in the SW framework and keep my interest.
I am looking for book recommendations rather than articles because I may be able to find the book on cassette.
I want to read lots of info without having to having to do the three R's
"Research, Request and Rehire a reader!"

Thanks for any suggestions!

I am getting ready to apply to schools to get my MSW with the goal of becoming a school social worker. Are there programs which specialize in school social work and, if so, is it necessary I enroll in such a program in order to eventually practice in a school? Are there any extra credentials I will need? As far as choosing a graduate program, my options are pretty limited as I can't relocate (I live in Connecticut, by the way.)

Thanks for any feedback :)

Lori, states may vary, but in Missouri, there is no specialization for school social work, There are physical,(medical) mental, administration, and DFS specializations.
Each overlap in the job market with the exception of the medical social worker, it is required or preferred by most hospitals and health agencies.
I happen to be a medical social worker and have done hospital, hospice and home health, but I currently spend most of my time as a school social worker at a couple of rural schools. I am beginning my fourth year.
Many states are pushing for, or have a certification process for school social work to maintain the quality of school social workers. This will entail a test to qualify.
Here, schools hire BSWs, but mostly MSWs, depending on the job description of the worker.
Hope that this gives you a little help, but you might check with your states school social work web site and find out more. The Missouri Association of School Social Workers (MASSW) is very helpful. Good Luck!!

By Eric Durkin on Monday, October 15, 2001 - 03:07 pm: Edit Post

My name is Eric Durkin, I am second year student at Minnesota State University, I am doing a class project and i was hoping I could get some questions answered based on personal accounts, if you could send your answers to my email that would be great it is durk37@hotmail.com
my first question is, Have you ever had to turn down a case for moral reasons? why?
2nd- What was the strangest or most difficult case you have ever dealt with? how did you deal with it? and if you could go back how would you deal with it now? or would you handle it the same way?
3rd- What is your definition of a social worker?
4th- Have you ever had a case that while you were dealing with it you fealt it was not needed that you were there? how did you deal with the situation?
5th- how do you feel at the end of the day? do you always feel that you are making a difference or do you sometimes feel like you can't understand why your doing this?
please take the time to respond, I am trying to decide if social work is something I would like to do for career, plus I really need to pass this class, thanks for your time, i hope to hear back from some of you. -Eric-
