Carolyn, you give me hope! I'm entering the third year of my program and it's good to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel (and it's not a train!)
Enjoy those three letters, and grin away :-)

Congratulations Carolyn! You are an inspiration to other non-traditional students, such as myself!

I just wanted to post that, after years of wondering if I should pursue an MSW, I just finished my first year of graduate school at the age of 52! I am in a part time program, so only 3 more years to go! Well, better late than never, Betsy

It's never too late! Congrats, Betsy.

I am 57. I teach in a small BSW program. In the last 5 years we've graduated 7 new BSWS who were in their 50s. Three have, or are going on for their masters. I am honored every day by my association with these fine professionals. The each overcame much more in earning their degrees than I ever even imagined.
Congratulations Betsy, you've chosen a wonderfull valuable mission.

Does anyone know where I can download or view a copy of the DSM-IV-TR online? My professor assigned a reading from it (Appendix I) and said we could get it online but the site he mentioned charges a subscription fee that is too expensive and I can't find anything else. I am in my final semester at Fordham's Graduate School of Social Service and have not purchased a copy yet. Thank you!

Hello Betsy, I just read your post and wanted to tell you that I went back to get my undergrad degree at the age of 51 (but I told everyone I was 50 - I don't kinow why). Now, I am finishing up my graduate studies and will be finished in
December, 2009. I am 57, feel great and am looking forward to great things! Hang in there and be encouraged.

Kathryn,

Is there a copy of the DSM in your school's library? Or if you are in field placement, there might be a copy at your field agency. I believe you can get short term (24 hrs.) access to the online version for $35.

I would hold off making a purchase of the DSM IV-TR because the DSM V is due out in 3-6 months which will render your investment in the DSM IV obsolete.

And I would suggest that in class you politely raise your hand, and when called upon, tell your instructor what you've learned here.

Hi Kathryn, thanks for your kind words of encouragement. Actually, I am taking this year off due to financial difficulties. (husband was laid off)and also a few other issues. I am hoping to continue my studies next year. It's so great to hear from other non-traditional students. What kind of social work do you want to do? Betsy
