Ken,
As a BSW student with one year left until graduation, there are a few pieces of advice that I could offer.
1. Be honest with yourself. If you are uncomfortable with a certain population, acknowledge these feelings, and address them.
2. Don't go around thinking you're a horrible person if you discover you have a bias or prejudice against a certain group. We all do. Again, acknowledge these feelings, and check yourself.
3. You won't save the world. But you will make a difference, person by person, family by family. Don't let anyone tell you you can't.
4. Find a good academic advisor, and stick with him or her through your entire undergraduate career (if possible). This person will help you get through the rough times, and will make sure you complete all your requirements so there are no suprises when its time for you to walk!
5. Speak up! If you are ever in a field placement and you aren't getting the experience you want, for goodness sakes, let it be known! You aren't working your rear-end off in class everyday to file someone's papers for free!
6. Keep up with the news. Your professors will appreciate your insights, and all your friends will admire your worldly knowledge!
7. Get used to talking in front of people. Group projects are the best way to practice your public speaking abilities as well as your people skills. You're going to be working in groups in whatever field you choose, so you better be good at it!
This is all I have for now! I'll probably think of more later!
