Scottie:
Quite a number of human service organizations are vested in their employees seeking and obtaining degrees or other training that is relevant to their work. These HSOs know that it contributes to higher morale among employees, plus clients receive better services as the employee's learning is applied to the job. These are highly desirable outcomes for HSOs today.
Policies and procedures will vary from organization to organization. Many will, at least, provide time off with pay to permit the employee to attend a class during work hours. This can really help as class schedules may collide with work schedules. Such a fringe benefit costs nothing to the employer.
Some HSOs will subsidize the costs of tuition in part or in full. Some provide other supports in exchange for a commitment to continue working for the HSO once the degree is completed.
I know of many colleagues who would not have been able to advance their educations (BSW/MSW) without this kind of support from their employer. I, too, am someone who benefitted from such support, obtaining my MSSW on a part time basis (5 years) while working full time in mental health. My employer and supervisor were enormously supportive of my efforts. That support made a real difference to me.
I hope that this helps. May the dialogue continue.
