Marian:

I have an under grad degree in psychology and sociology as well as an MSW. Here are three reasons for taking psychology courses:

1) This foundation has been of great benefit to me in how I view and approach social problems and family dynamics.
2) Since social work is often practiced in a multi-disciplinary setting, it helps to understand some of the theoretical and practical approaches used by other disciplines. This will also help you to better understand the differences between social work and psychology.
3) In my field of social work (children's mental health), cognitive-behavioural therapy and behaviour modification techniques are often used. A basic psychology course will introduce these interventions, which may not be covered in any of your social work courses.

I hope this is helpful.

Tom from Canada
