Social Work Student Forum

THE NEW SOCIAL WORKERŽ ONLINE Discussion Forum: Social Work Student Forum

Use the Social Work Student Forum to talk about schools, coursework, field placement, and other student issues.

I agree completely. It is one thing to look at this forum as a resource - after all, I often use it to get opinions and feedback from more experienced workers - but it is another to ask questions for an interview assignment and expect people to answer them.

I have posted before about assignments that were confusing or worded in a way that I didn't understand, and everyone has been nice enough to make suggestions or try to clarify so that I could then complete the assignment ON MY OWN. Posts like the one above take advantage of the vast knowledge here and make other students scared to post about legitimate concerns.

I will receive my MSW in December 2006, how do start studing for my LMSW?

Does anyone know anything about UPenn's MSW program? Primarily for clinical studies, but also the whole school overall. Because my main two schools are UPenn and NYU, and although NYU would be amazing, it would be a rough commute for me while UPenn would be easier. Any input would be appreciated.

oh, i hear that bryn mar (spelling) has a better clinical program than penn.

yeah that seems to be what I have been reading. Penn seems to be more research/macro oriented too and I'm looking for a clinical program. I know they are both expensive but i'm having difficulty finding an exact number on the tuition for bryn mawr. Do you or anyone have an idea on the tuition for for bryn mawr?

what would you do?
Sonia is a 15 year-old student who is in an initial session with you as a school social worker. Sonia has been referred for social work services because she is two months pregnant. During the intake with you, Sonia states that she wants to have an abortion. Sonia has also asked you not to tell her parents about the pregnancy. She states that her pregnancy is the result of forced sexual relations with a 22 year-old male that occurred at a party where she (the client) had been consuming alcohol. The client further states that she is fearful and that she does not know how her parents will react to the information.

what would you do? what are the issues here? what are your concerns? what are the ethics involved? what does the teacher expect?

Denis...clever to post the situations in different threads. Still, the ethics here are that students need to do their own work, not ask us to do it for them! I would suggest you process this yourself, as well as the other scenario. After you have come to a conclusion and rationale for that conclusion post it here, I suspect you then could get folks to respond.

By the way, faculty are known to read and post here...so you also take a risk!

I do hope this is the worst of your risk behaviour. None the less, if I were your professor, I would be asking you to write an additional research paper on your findings from this and other sites.
I am always curious if there has been a student who has ever given credit to the contributors when they have gained the information from this type of site. There is, afterall, an APA format for citing such resources.

William, I've only been teaching "in the classroom setting" for three years now, but I've been posting here for two or three times that long. (Hey Linda, when did this all get started?) Last year I had a paper turned in, and as I read it I recognized that I was suddenly reading something that I had posted four or five years ago! My mind was screaming "Aha!, I gotcha!" And then I came to the end of the quote on the next page and it had all been properly referenced by the student with a parenthetical note of (I couldn't have said it better;-)) sheesh of course she got an A! Gary,

The Web site started in 1995! The discussion forum, in its current form, started in 1998... I did a presentation on it at the social work technology conference in South Carolina that year. (It existed in another format before that.)

I do think that there are legitimate uses of this forum for students who are doing assignments, and yes, as William pointed out, APA style specifies a format for citing such sources. I know there have been times, for example, when students had an assignment specifically to go online and find out social workers' opinions about an issue. There's a lot to learn here, both for students and for more experienced folks. We can all learn from each other. :-)

Linda

Oh, how funny, Gary. Nice to know that some will give proper credit.
