Going for the MSW, Mom Style

12 years later...

I returned to school for an MSW when my oldest was 2 and my youngest was born during the stint in academia. Being a full time student, mom, and employee was tough. Thanks to the support of my husband and MSW cohort, I got through it. Now, 12 years later, I'm at it again in a DSW program. Same supportive husband and wonderful children (as teens) and the most important thing that I've learned about the balance is creating a culture at home that supports education and the "whys" of going back to school. We all know that I'll drag a backpack to cart the kids to their activities and will sometimes be away to attend class and conferences. But because we committed to the process together, it works. And I am proud of the example that my children see. Never stop learning. Achieve your dreams. And do it to help your fellow humans.

Going for the MSW, Mom Style

I can totally relate to your story. I was a wife and mother of two teenagers while completing my MSW degree. I endured many personal hardships while trying to balance work, unemployment, and issues at home. Many people do not realize how difficult it is to go back to school while trying to keep it all together. I hope that your story encourages others who are making it work one day at a time.
