Social Work Month 2013: How I Am Celebrating Social Work Month E-mail
Written by Artan C. Hughes, LLMSW, SSW

I am Artan C. Hughes, school social worker. I reside in Detroit, Michigan, and work at two locations that are comprised of diverse populations.

This year I am using the theme from the National Association of Social Workers, “Weaving Threads of Resilience and Advocacy: The Power of Social Work.” For the staff, they will receive handouts on the definition of social work, school social work, inspirational quotes, and giveaways.

For the students, I have an in reach and outreach project. The in reach project consists of giving away clothing and books to the students, which also honors Reading Month. The outreach project consists of the students raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society .  To tie in the social work theme with the younger students, I will go into the classrooms and give a definition of resilience and advocacy. There will be a drawing contest in which the students will draw what they think represents resilience/advocacy, and there will be an assembly discussing the benefits of a therapy dog.

To tie in the social work theme with the older students, there will be a showing of two videos called “Survivor’s Pride,” which talks about resilience in young people, and a bullying clip from www.upworthy.com,  which will encourage discussion about resilience/advocacy. The Manhood Project, a mentoring organization, will be onsite to speak with the young men about issues, problems, and concerns. Also, I will be conducting a  “Keeping It Real Vol 1” discussion for the young ladies to discuss issues/problems/concerns.

During our Family Literacy Night, I will have community organizations come to the event to share information about what their organizations are doing in the community. To acknowledge Parenting Month, the parents will receive a packet of information to assist them with becoming better parents.
