Social Work Education and Credentials

"I Want to Help People"

You want to help people and you've heard that becoming a social worker might be the right career path for you.

Great! The first step is to recognize that social work is a profession. It requires that you get a specific, accredited degree in social work, follow a professional code of ethics, and meet other requirements to practice social work in your area of the world.

If you live in the United States, you will need to get a degree that is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. The CSWE accredits bachelor's degree programs (usually called a BSW) and master's degree programs (usually called an MSW).

You will also need to look into becoming a licensed social worker. See the Association of Social Work Boards for information.

If you are seeking financial aid for your educational expenses, here are two helpful resources: FAFSA and The Student Guide to Financial Aid.
