Ethics Scenario #100: Community Health and Human Services of Harristown County

by

100. Lindsey is the client intake specialist for the Community Health and Human Services Providers of Harristown County, a private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that meets social and medical needs of seniors living in Harristown County. Lindsey’s job is to meet with new clients of the organization and take down their identifying information, medical history, and screen them for eligibility for services and any financial subsidies that they may qualify for. The clients are quite diverse, being natives of scores of different foreign countries, practicing many different religions, and are diverse with respect to age, gender, race, and sexual preference. Lindsey works in a typical cubicle, with enough space for herself, her desk, and two chairs for her clients to sit in while she enters data into her computer in response to her questions. Lindsey is quite religious, and her cubicle is decorated with crosses, statues of the Virgin Mary, pictures of Jesus, and posters declaring the glory of her Savior. Lindsey feels that in her job, she is doing God’s work, even if some of her clients are not worthy of this and are doomed to eternal damnation by not accepting Jesus, who died for their sins and offers them eternal life.

a. Is Lindsey’s behavior ethical?
