Ethics Scenario #42: Wildwood Day Care Center

42. Linda, the executive director of the Wildwood Day Care Center, is a very spiritual person. She believes that everyone has the right to believe whatever they want to with respect to Jesus and His role in their lives, but she strongly believes that everyone who does not accept Jesus as their Savior is going to Hell. She does make an effort to treat nonbelievers fairly, but makes it a point to not hire anyone who doesn’t share her enthusiasm for a fundamentalist Christian perspective. While the Center is officially nonsectarian and serves clients from all religious faiths, Linda sincerely feels that her faith and those of similar-thinking co-workers is what creates an environment that improves the quality of the facility. She starts each staff meeting with several minutes of prayer, and no current employees have expressed any concern about this, although her exit interviews with past employees have indicated that this made some uncomfortable--evidence to her that their employment in this organization was not a good fit.
