Ethics Scenario #57:Harristown Symphony Orchestra Association

by

57. Nathan serves as one of 24 board members of the Harristown Symphony Orchestra Association. Nathan, now 82, used to be a member of the orchestra. Once he retired, he was asked to join the board. Nathan likes to hang out in the offices of the orchestra, sticking his nose in among the staff, sometimes helping out as a volunteer, but mostly making a nuisance of himself. He continually orders the staff around, telling them how to do their job, creeping them out by taking notes as he watches, criticizing and often countermanding the directions the staff have received from their supervisor and/or the managing director. He demands to see all of the bookkeeping and expense accounts, and berates employees, particularly the major gifts fundraising staff, for spending more than a few dollars on an out-of-town dinner.

a. Is Nathan’s behavior ethical?
