Ethics Scenario #58: Baytown Food Bank

by

58. Rachel is the executive director of the Baytown Food Bank, established in 1972 to accept donations of food, mostly nonperishable, from the public and distributing it to the needy. A personal friend of Rachel’s, Katherine, who works for a foundation, tells Rachel of a funding opportunity that may be of interest. The Foundation is looking for a reputable nonprofit organization partner to organize rides for senior citizens to take them to doctors’ appointments. She suggests that Baytown Food Bank could generate net revenue from the grant, which could help Baytown expand its services beyond the Baytown city limits, an objective that has been in the Baytown Food Bank’s strategic plan, but has always been delayed because of a lack of funding. Katherine tells her friend that she would do what she can to steer the grant to the Food Bank if Rachel would like her to do so. Rachel thanks Katherine and Katherine agrees to grease the skids, and sends Rachel the forms to apply for the grant. Rachel applies for the funds the days after she receives the application forms.
