Ethics Scenario #71:RFM Counseling Center

by

71. Connie is a therapist at the RFM Counseling Center, a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization that provides services to veterans with PTSD. Connie has dreamed about starting her own practice, but is insecure about whether such a private practice would be financially viable, with two kids to support and soon to be applying to college. Connie decides to test the waters before diving full-in, and retain her full-time position at the Center, and put out her shingle in a private office located just one block away. At first, she discreetly tells her clients at the Center that she has a private practice as well, offering convenient evening hours, and providing a discount. Later, once she realizes that she can make a go of it, she offers her resignation, and sends a welcome letter to each of her former clients, soliciting them to continue where they left off at her new place of employment.

a. Is Connie’s behavior ethical?
