RE: 'Personal' Statement

Hi, I just wondered in terms of writing personal things in the statement, how necessary this is? I have experienced difficulty in my life, as I'm sure the majority of people have. But it seems funny to use this a means of enhancing your personal statement. It feels a bit like someone using a sob story to win the X Factor. Sorry to be so critical, I just feel uneasy about being so personal in an application.

Personal statements

Although they are sometimes called "personal statements," the instructions for what to include in your application essay will vary from school to school. Be sure to follow the instructions for the essay for each school, and include "personal" information to the extent that it supports your answers to the questions asked and supports the goal of showing your ability to be successful in graduate school. more than 6 years ago

Thanks for the advice!

This has been one of the best articles I've come across. I am in the process of applying for my MSW, and am really hoping to get in to UNE. I am extremely nervous about the personal statement section, and it being 'good enough.' This article is a great find, and will be very helpful when writing my own personal statement. Thank you!
