The Giving Tree

I applaud this article! The message of "The Giving Tree" is not just a harmful one for professionals. It is a harmful one for mothers and their maturing sons and daughters., The book echoes a child’s fantasy that a mom gives every inch of herself in order to care for and protect him/her/them. To find fulfillment in time our children must grow toward an awareness of self-competence. A mother never gives up her desire to love, nurture, and keep our children safe. But we know that we must let go and believe in our children's growing abilities to care for themselves and in time chart their individual courses in life. This book highlights damaging regression and labels it mother love.

The Giving Tree

Yes! SaraKay, thank you for this important connection. Because social work is a predominantly female profession, many of the sexist phenomena, which are played out in mothering roles, are played out in our profession! Peace, Love, and Self-care!
